Mindful Black Friday
Let’s pause and reflect on Black Friday and the tendency to overconsume, exploring a few yoga principles that can help us shop more mindfully during these ‘black deals’ and beyond.

Ahimsa - non-harming, non-violence, compassion for all.
All the “good deals”… but good for whom? Can I choose what causes the least harm, even in how I consume? Is the product I am buying free from violence or exploitation? Am I unintentionally supporting human rights violations? Could I find a kinder way to get it — for people, animals, and the planet?
Santosha - contentment, being at peace with what I already have.
Can I appreciate that I already have enough? Rushing into “good deals” often distracts from the quiet satisfaction of what’s already here. Maybe true joy isn’t in the purchase, but in noticing the abundance around me.
Aparigraha - non-grasping, letting go.
Do I really need more, or do I already have enough? Sometimes exploring my own closet or a second-hand shop reveals treasures I forgot I had. Choosing non-grasping helps me honor both what I own and the planet’s resources.
Brahmacharya - balance, moderation.
Originally linked to chastity, but here it’s about using my energy wisely. Money is energy, and rushing from deal to deal can drain both. Moderation helps me focus on what truly matters and resist the pull of impulse.
Choosing mindfulness over the consumption rush.

And now, let’s reflect through a few yoga principles that apply in everyday life, also during
shopping:
- Ahimsa: non-harming, non violence, compassion for all.
- All the good deals, good deals ok but for whom. Do I want to choose what causes the least harm… even in the way I consume. is whatever product I am rushing to purchase this week/month free of violence in its production? any human rights am I violating? Any other way I could purchase this item? Instead of a “good deal” could this be a better deal for everyone?
- Santosha: contentment, being at peace with oneself and others.
- Can I appreciate and feel content about the idea I already have enough? The “good deals” are making me rush into buying something I may not really need
- Aparigraha : awareness of abundance, fulfillment, greedylessness.
Maybe I already have more that engough? Sometimes, exploring the old corners of my closet can make me discovers tresories.
Maybe there is more than enough that has been produced, and second hand shops or trock can get me what I need or want?
- Brahmacharya: balance, moderation of the vital force — originally tied to chastity, but here I’m focusing on choosing how I am spending my energy (and my money is energy) rather than letting it get pulled in every direction, impulses and rushes.
